Meet the small business team

We have worked with Liston Newton Advisory for over a decade. During that time, our business has grown substantially both organically and through purchases. This wouldn’t have been possible without Liston Newton Advisory to assist with our business planning, providing proactive advice and ensuring our accounts were always compliant in a complex and volatile industry.
Karsten Horne

Their strategies turned our business from making a loss, to recording a 6-month net profit of 36 per cent. And we are now on track to show a 240 per cent increase in turnover over the next financial year.

How should I be preparing budgets?

A budget is an estimate of your income and expenses for the coming year and provides valuable information when compared to your actual trading. By preparing a budget, you hold yourself accountable to your income and expenses and can identify areas for improvement in your business.

A budget needs to be realistic, but also challenging. There is no point in preparing a conservative budget which you will easily meet, as there is no incentive to push and drive.

What is a profit and loss statement?

A profit and loss or income statement lists your sales and expenses and is generally recorded on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis. It tells you how much real profit you're making or losing.

A profit and loss statement can help you develop sales targets and an appropriate sales price for goods and services. You can use tools like breakeven, profit margin, and mark up calculators to help you.

What is a balance sheet?

A balance sheet is a snapshot of your business on a particular date. It lists all of your business's assets and liabilities, and works out your net assets. A balance sheet can also help you work out your working capital—the money needed to fund day-to-day operations, as well as your business liquidity—how quickly you are able to pay your current debts.

Your balance sheet can give you a good indication of the financial health of your business.
